034 Saba

This is a middle Makki Surah, named after the people of Saba, who were also mentioned in Surah An Naml, and they accepted Islam through the invitation of Sulaiman (AS).

Dawud(AS), who first spoke on in Surah Al Baqarah when he killed the Jaalut, was made a prophet and leader for the Children of Israel. He was gifted many other blessings from Allaah (SWT), such as his beautiful and powerful voice with which he sang praises of Allaah (SWT) and the mountains and birds joined him in it. Also, Allaah (SWT) taught him the skill of making armor from iron, which was soft in his hands. His son, Sulaiman (AS) was also a prophet and was given control over the winds as well as over the jinns, who used to work for him. The death of Sulaiman (AS) was an interesting incident, in that his life was taken while he was still standing on his staff and the jinn thought he was watching them work. But an ant gnawed away his staff and so the dead body of Sulaiman (AS) fell on the ground, making the jinn realize that he had been dead all that time, and they had been working fearful of his authority.

The people of Saba were ungrateful for the blessings of Allaah (SWT), and so they were punished by the flood of the dam.

The disbelievers alleged various things about the Qur’an, something calling it a magic, other times calling it a fabrication, so they were not even consistent with their accusations. On the Day of Resurrection, they will claim to believe in it, but their belief will not avail them any good on that day.
